Moving is exciting but can be tough on your pets. At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we know how important it is to make sure your pets feel safe and secure during the transition.
According to the Association of Animal Welfare Advancement, 7% of dogs and 8% of cats are surrendered to shelters due to moving-related issues. To ensure your pets are comfortable and protected, here are some tips from our team and The Humane Society of the United States.
Prepping for the move:
- Get your pet used to their carrier or crate early to help ease the transition.
- Update all tags and microchips with your new information well ahead of the move.
- Keep your pets separate from the moving crew to avoid stress and possible accidents.
Tailored advice for different pets:
- Dogs:
- Use treats to help keep your dog calm, and offer some to the movers to help them bond with your pet.
- Bring along comfort items such as their blanket, bed, or favorite toy to help them relax.
- If you can’t be there, have a friend or family member stay with your dog to help them settle into the new space.
- Cats:
- Keep your cat in a quiet room during the move where they won’t be disturbed.
- Bring familiar items like toys or blankets to help ease anxiety.
- Let them explore the new home slowly and at their own pace to avoid overwhelming them.
- Birds:
- Use a well-ventilated carrier and keep your birds out of direct sunlight during transport.
- Ensure they have enough food and water to remain comfortable throughout the day.
- Fish:
- Transport your fish in bags with a combination of tank water and fresh water, and keep them cool and in a dark place.
- Set up their tank in the new home, allowing it to stabilize before putting the fish back in.
- Small animals:
- Small pets are sensitive to temperature changes, so keep their carriers out of sunlight and away from drafts.
- Provide enough food and water to keep them comfortable throughout the move.
Remember, while TWO MEN AND A TRUCK doesn’t transport pets, planning ahead will help make the transition smoother for your furry and feathered friends.
