What Can and Can’t Go on a Moving Truck?

Packing for a move can make it easy to assume everything in your home can go on the moving truck. However, there are some items that movers cannot transport or that are better kept with you. Knowing what to set aside before moving day can help your move go more smoothly.

What Can Go on a Moving Truck?

Most everyday household belongings can be transported by professional movers. Furniture, clothing, dishes, books, electronics, home décor, and properly packed boxes are all common items that can make the trip to your new home.

If you're unsure about a large, unusual, or specialty item, check with your moving company before moving day.

What Can't Go on a Moving Truck?

Hazardous Materials and Gas-Powered Equipment

Flammable, explosive, and corrosive materials cannot be transported. This includes items such as propane tanks, household cleaners, fertilizer, and fire extinguishers. Gas-powered equipment, including lawnmowers and snow blowers, also needs special preparation. Fuel tanks should be drained before moving these items.

Plants and Animals

Plants and pets should not be transported in the moving truck. Make separate arrangements to safely get them to your new home.

Perishable Food

Fresh, refrigerated, and frozen foods shouldn't go on the moving truck. Before moving day, use what you can from your refrigerator and freezer, and make other arrangements for anything you still need to transport.

Medications and Important Personal Items

Prescription medications, cash, jewelry, important documents, photographs, and sentimental belongings are best kept with you. Pack these items separately so they remain accessible throughout your move.

Plan Ahead for Moving Day

As you pack, create a separate area for anything that needs to travel with you or requires special handling. If you're unsure whether an item can be transported, contact your local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® office ahead of time.

Taking care of these items before the movers arrive can help keep your moving day organized and avoid last-minute surprises.
