Thriving through your Winter Move

Winter.

The season most Minnesotans have grown to know all too well. Most of the country is sitting at 40+ degrees, and we are hitting a heat wave at 25. The cold and snow make things more challenging, including driving, walking, and pretty much everything. The one thing we have some serious experience in is moving, and winter moving can be tough.

Moving in the winter does not have to be dreadful. You must be prepared so you can avoid any headaches and potential damage to your furniture, your home, or yourself. After having a negative degree winter experience, myself, I want to share a few tips to help make you feel prepared on moving day.

Pay Attention to Conditions

I know this sounds like common sense, but we never know what the weather can do in Minnesota. Sometimes it’s sunny and 25, but sometimes it’s snowing 15 inches. When it came to my moving day, nothing was going to stop me from moving into my new home, not even negative 5 degrees and a winter storm brewing. Rest assured; the move can be done. A little preplanning will be needed. Think about floors, heat, and truck placement for the easiest way to get furniture in during winter weather.

Protect your Floors

I cannot say this enough for a winter move. Protect your floors! We moved into a brand-new house, so it was my floors were a major concern since there was quite a bit of snow on the ground. If you hire movers, many times, they will put a floor protector down, but it never hurts to add a little extra. If you have carpet, look into carpet protection plastic. It is unrealistic to think you will be able to take your shoes off while carrying furniture and boxes in the house. Having pads or protection ready will make your move easier and faster!

Watch your Step

In Minnesota, we know sidewalks and driveways can be a little tricky. The pathways from the door to the truck need to be completely clear before you start the moving process. If it snowed, make sure to shovel the driveway and sidewalk and use snow/ice melt to prevent any slick spots while carrying furniture.

Dress Warm

When you move, chances are your doors are open the whole time. Even when you are inside working, it may get cold in there with the door open. Now, you don’t have to wear your winter coat while unpacking your kitchen, but make sure to have sweaters, socks, and warm layers. If you are going to be in and out of the moving truck, consider wearing waterproof winter boots and investing in warm gloves that grip.

Prepare for the Early Nightfall

One of the main downsides to winter is how fast the sun goes down at night, and this is something you should factor in when planning for your upcoming move. Starting earlier in the day is great, but if that isn’t possible, make sure there are lights accessible should darkness come into play.

Stay Hydrated

Oftentimes, we don’t think about drinking water as much in the winter. When we exchange sunshine for snowflakes, we sometimes forget to keep up with our water. With heavy lifting and expending extra energy, we must stay hydrated.

The air is also very dry during the winter, and can quickly cause dehydration due to fluids being depleted in respiration.

Have a bottle close and grab a drink between moving items.
