3 fool proof thoughts to consider when hiring a moving company.

I hear it all the time. "Moving is the worst." "I don't want to deal with moving ever again." "I won't move again until I'm dead." I mean, that is a little extreme, but it is a fact that moving is the number 3 most stressful event in a person's life. It is right under death and divorce. WHAT?!

I've moved a lot in my young adult life. Yes, I was single, but I did live on several third floor apartments with no elevator. (It was a great time. I wouldn't recommend it.) I have also done the dreaded cross-country move with a baby in tow. Check out my previous post about that! I can say from experience that I know and understand moving. I also work for a moving company, so that helps too.

Moving companies have a tough job. We are moving people's most valuable positions, and they are trusting us to bring it back to them in the same condition. Not only do we have to do this, we have to it fast. Not all moving companies are created equal. I have used the best, and I have used some bad ones too. I am here to give you some insight on what to look for when hiring a moving company, so you don't end up disappointed.

First, DO YOUR RESEARCH! Did you know many states, don't require a specific license to be a moving company. This means businesses don't have to be licensed, bonded, or insured to run their business. If something breaks, chances are you will never hear from that company again. I don't care if they are the Tom Brady of moving companies, accidents do happen. Find yourself a moving company that has your back from beginning to end, even when a damage happens.

Next, don't be afraid to ask about their employees. These people are coming in your home and seeing everything you own. The questions to ask are: Do you hire your movers or are they temp or day labor? Are your team members background checked and drug tested? What training do you give your moving teams? These three questions are key to a successful move.

My last piece of advice is to book early. The real estate market is hot as fire right now, and so is the moving business. The days of booking a week before your move is long gone. To get the perfect day and the perfect company, do yourself a favor, and book your move as soon as your house goes under contract. You will thank me later!

Moving doesn’t have to be scary, but we need to prepare for the big day. Moving needs to be exciting and fun. It’s a time for your family to bond and grow. Pick your movers carefully and confidently by following a few simple steps, and your move day won’t leave a bad taste in your mouth.
