When you think of moving, many people think about all the packing and decluttering. We sometimes forget that moving can also be stressful for your furry companion.
If you are anything like us, your animals are members of your family. When we moved across the country, our pup, Arnie, was definitely a little nervous and could sense that a change was happening.
Our pets know when we are leaving for vacation. Can you imagine what they think when the whole house is getting packed up? Here are some tips to calm your pets during the moving process, so everyone (furry or not) can easily transition into their new home.
1. Pack a moving kit for your pet.
Just like humans, our pets need their essentials on the day of the move. Pack a separate bag for your pets with anything they may need or want during the day. Think food, bowls, toys, and medications. Don't forget to bring along their pet beds!
2. Let your animals smell and get used to moving boxes and supplies.
If your animals are free to roam around the house, let them smell and get used to the moving boxes. I know it sounds weird, but talk to them while you pack. Like kids, animals like to be a part of what is happening in your life. Seeing the boxes and supplies will make your pet less nervous when moving day arrives.
3. Have your pets in a quiet, secluded area during the move.
To ensure safety of the pets and everyone involved in the move, it is best to find a cozy enclosed space for your pet to hang out. If you have a dog that loves doggy daycare, today may be a great day to send your friend. If daycare is not an option, consider having a friend come hang out with your pets and give them some extra love. A quiet space is essential to keeping your companion calm. I would not recommend bringing your animal to your new home before you are ready to be there for a while.
4. If moving long distances, plan for pet-friendly accommodations.
If you have traveled with your pets, you probably know that finding a hotel for all types of animals can be a little more than difficult. Do some research in advance, and plan where you are going to stay if needing to stay overnight. I know from experience that finding a place that accepts 100 pound dogs is not easy. Don't get caught in a pickle on moving day. You will already have enough on your plate.
5. Make a safe space for animals in the new home.
When you get to the new home, have a safe space to put your pets. Remember, they have no clue where they are. They may try and explore and explore out the open door. Many pets get lost during moves. We don't want you to be one of them.
6. Check in with your vet.
If you are moving out of state, make sure to grab your pet's vet records including vaccines. Does your pet have anxiety? Talk to your vet about anxiety remedies and medications that may keep your animal calm during the transition. If your pet is currently on medications, make sure you have refills and everything you need until you find a new vet.
Your pets feel the stress of moving too. We know it's hard. We do it everyday. Having a plan for your furry friends makes life so much easier when it comes to moving. We hope you and your best pal feel more prepared for move day!
