Moving is an exciting but potentially stressful time for everyone in the household, including your pets. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® knows that ensuring a smooth transition for your pets is just as important as the move itself.
Sadly, 7% of dogs and 8% of cats are surrendered to shelters during moves due to housing issues, according to the Association of Animal Welfare Advancement. To prevent this from happening to your furry family members, follow these expert tips from us and The Humane Society of the United States.
What to do before moving day:
- Help your pets get used to their carriers or crates early to reduce stress.
- Update all ID tags and microchips with your new address or contact info.
- On moving day, keep your pets in a safe, separate area away from the movers.
Tailored tips for different pets:
- Dogs:
- Give your dog a special treat to help them feel at ease, and allow movers to do the same to make your dog feel comfortable around them.
- Bring their favorite comfort items (like their bed or toy) along for the ride.
- If you won’t be around, arrange for someone to stay with your dog to help them adjust to the new home.
- Cats:
- Choose a quiet room where your cat can stay during the move to minimize stress.
- Familiar objects, such as their blanket or favorite toy, will help them feel secure.
- Gradually introduce them to the new home, giving them time to explore at their own pace.
- Birds:
- Use an appropriately sized, well-ventilated carrier to transport birds and keep them out of direct sunlight.
- Make sure they have enough food and water to stay comfortable throughout the move.
- Fish:
- Transfer your fish into plastic bags filled with both old tank water and fresh water. Keep them cool and away from light.
- Let their tank filter and stabilize for a few hours in your new home before reintroducing the fish.
- Small animals:
- Protect small animals from extreme temperature changes by placing their carriers out of sunlight and away from cold drafts.
- Ensure they have access to food and water throughout the day.
Though TWO MEN AND A TRUCK doesn’t transport pets, having a solid plan in place will make the move easier for everyone—including your furry, feathered, and scaly companions.
