Relocating to a new home is an exciting time, but it can also be challenging for your pets. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® understands that your pets are family, so we’re here to offer expert advice to help them feel more at ease.
The Association of Animal Welfare Advancement reports that 7% of dogs and 8% of cats are surrendered to shelters because of moving-related housing issues. Follow these tips, in collaboration with The Humane Society of the United States, to make sure your pets transition smoothly during the move.
Before you move:
- Start getting your pet comfortable with their crate well in advance, especially if you’re moving a long distance.
- Update their identification and microchip information as soon as you can.
- To avoid any accidents, keep pets in a quiet, separate space while movers are working.
Pet-specific tips:
- Dogs:
- Bring their favorite treats to help keep them calm. You can even offer some to the movers to help familiarize your dog with them.
- Keep their blanket, toy, or bed nearby to provide comfort throughout the move.
- If you won’t be available to stay with your dog, invite a friend to be with them while they settle in.
- Cats:
- Keep your cat in a secluded room where they can rest during the move.
- Familiar items like their toys and bedding can help reduce anxiety.
- Introduce them to their new home gradually, so they don’t feel overwhelmed.
- Birds:
- Transport birds in a well-ventilated carrier, keeping them away from the sun.
- Provide plenty of food and water to keep them comfortable.
- Fish:
- Move your fish in sealed bags with a mix of new and tank water. Keep them cool and out of the light.
- Run their tank in the new house for a few hours before reintroducing them.
- Small animals:
- Watch for temperature changes. Keep their carriers protected from sun and drafts.
- Make sure they have enough food, water, and a clean, comfortable space during the move.
While TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® can’t move your pets, following these tips will help ensure they stay happy and safe during your relocation.
