Tips & Tricks for Moving with Pets!

Moving is a new and fun adventure, but it can put some stress on your beloved pets. We want to make sure your pets are as comfortable as possible during this big adjustment. According to the Association of Animal Welfare Advancement, the No. 1 reason why pets are given away is because of moving. Whether it is because of downsizing, rent agreements, etc. 7% of dogs and 8% of cats are given to shelters due to housing issues. Here are some tips from the experts at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and The Humane Society of the United States to ensure the moving process goes smoothly.

Before the big move:

  • Get your pets acclimated to their crates sooner rather than later, especially when moving long distances. This will ensure your pet is more comfortable when being transported to a different location.
  • Make sure all of your pet’s tags and other information are up to date as soon as possible.
  • Keep your pets away from the moving team during the process to ensure no injuries and no loose pets.

Dogs:

  • When our furry friends are anxious sometimes their favorite treats can help! You can even give treats to the moving team as they arrive so they are more familiar with them.
  • Bring your dog's comfort items with them. This can be a blanket, toy, bed, etc. These items will help them throughout the day to feel more comfortable with the big changes.
  • If you're unable to be at your new home during this time try to invite a friend or family member over so that they do not feel alone and they can get acquainted with their new surroundings.

Cats:

  • Cats can sometimes be more timid. Save a special spot for them to hang out during the day where they can easily be checked on.
  • Bring their favorite items with them to make them feel less anxious. These can be items like water bowls, toys, blankets, etc.
  • Introduce them slowly to their new home as they can get overwhelmed very quickly.

Birds:

  • Get the appropriate sized carrier for birds and keep them away from the sun so they’re nice and cool.
  • Bring plenty of food and water for them throughout the day.

Fish:

  • Make sure your fish are in a very secure place. You should put them in bags with new water and water from their aquarium and place them in a cool dark area.
  • When you have arrived at your new home, plug in their tank and make sure it runs for a few hours before putting them back in.

Other small animals:

  • Smaller animals have a more drastic reaction to temperature changes. Keep them protected from the sunlight or cool drafts.
  • Make sure they have food, water, and a clean place to stay throughout the day.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK does not transport animals, but it is still important to have a plan to transport them before your moving day!
