Moving can be an exciting chapter in your life, but it’s a big adjustment for your pets. At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we want to help make the process as stress-free as possible for your pets.
According to the Association of Animal Welfare Advancement, housing issues like downsizing or rental agreements are responsible for 7% of dogs and 8% of cats being surrendered to shelters. Here’s how you can ensure your pets stay safe and comfortable during your move with advice from our team and The Humane Society of the United States.
Before the move:
- Begin crate training your pets well before moving day to help them adjust.
- Double-check that all identification tags and contact information are updated.
- Keep pets in a separate, quiet space while movers are working to avoid accidents or escape.
Pet-specific moving tips:
- Dogs:
- Calm anxiety with their favorite treats, and offer some to the moving team to help them become familiar with your dog.
- Make sure their comfort items (blanket, toy, etc.) are easily accessible during the move.
- If possible, have a friend or family member stay with your dog at your new home to help them adjust.
- Cats:
- Create a quiet, enclosed area where your cat can stay during the move.
- Keep familiar items like toys and blankets nearby for comfort.
- Let them explore the new space gradually to avoid overwhelming them.
- Birds:
- Use a suitable carrier to keep your birds safe and out of direct sunlight.
- Make sure they have enough food and water throughout the day.
- Fish:
- Transport your fish in bags filled with a mix of tank water and fresh water, and keep them in a cool, dark place.
- Set up their tank before reintroducing them to their new environment.
- Small animals:
- Protect them from extreme temperatures by keeping their carriers out of direct sunlight and drafts.
- Ensure they have access to food, water, and a clean habitat throughout the move.
