Once upon a time, in the early 1980s, there was a mother and her children with dreams for a better life. That mother’s name was Mary Ellen Sheets, who would go on to found TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®. The company’s humble beginnings started in the mid-western city of Lansing, Michigan. This city is where our corporate office currently resides.
In the Beginning
Brig and Jon Sorber (Mary Ellen’s sons), founded a simple moving company with their 1966 Ford. They called their company Men at Work Movers. It was advertised as such: Two Men and a Truck; $25/hr. As you may know, the company did not stay so small between the three of them. Brig then became the Executive Chair and Jon the Executive Vice President.
When they left for college, Mary hired a few workers to help keep her small business up and running. Later, in 1994, she brought on her daughter, Melanie Bergeron. Melanie initially helped with important administrative tasks without having any office and is now the current Chair of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK.
And as time went on, the company grew by leaps and bounds. And she did it through franchising her business in 1989. There are now 350 locations worldwide! What started as a small business venture is now sporting locations across the lower forty-eight states, Canada, the UK, and Ireland. And now for the past three years, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK has been rated number one in moving/junk removal for US franchised companies.
A Charitable Foundation
As the MOVERS WHO CARE®, we love to share our success with others. Mary Ellen Sheets, our founder, felt the same, which is why giving back to the community is such a large part of our organization. The first $1,000 in profit was split between ten charities in the area. We now have a variety of charitable drives our franchises run from season to season.
