MOVING IN THE RAIN

As we head into summer, rainy afternoons become more and more inevitable.

I used to love the rain. I found the sound very soothing, but that changed for me one night years ago when I woke up in the middle of the night to find 2 inches of water in my house. After triaging my house (shutting off the water to the burst pipe, sweeping the water outside, and attempting to salvage my belongings and my sanity) we called in the professionals to dry things out. As for the furniture, well my options (and finances) were limited, it all moved out onto the patio underneath the overhang for the three days it took to get the house cleaned up. And of course, it rained.

For those three days (and the following three years) every time it started to rain, I would run through a mental checklist of what could be damaged and what I could do to prevent it. Just as I started to begin to enjoy Mother Nature once again, I went to work for a moving company. And I thought it was bad when it was my own furniture I was worried about.

My new rainy-day mental checklist includes truck counts, locations, and weather reports. Here in South Florida, it is entirely possible that it is raining on one side of the street and not the other, and it would be lovely if we could coordinate loading the truck for when it is raining on the other side. How I wish the only scheduled moves on rainy days were people and businesses with covered loading docks.

So what can you do as a customer to prepare for your move regardless of the weather?

Pack early, pack well, and pack often. As with every other portion of your move, the more prepared you are the better we can serve you. The more boxed up things are the easier it is for us to care for them and to prevent damages. If your DVD player and TV, along with any other loose items, are not boxed then we will handle it but it will take time and materials.

Have a clear understanding of your moving company of their rainy day policies. Ours at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is simple. We will show up rain or shine. If the rain is irritating but not dangerous then we will continue the move taking as many precautions as we can to make sure your prized possessions do not get wet. Blankets and stretch wrap will be used liberally at no additional cost.

If the rain causes safety issues, then we will not be able to continue the move until conditions change; you will not be charged for this time. Safety concerns include but are not limited to, lightning or torrential downpours that turn our ramps into waterslides.
