Put together an emergency plan
You never know when an emergency will arise, which is why it’s so important to create an emergency plan. Having a plan for a severe weather situation, fire, and any other emergency event will benefit the whole family as it gives them a better understanding of what they should do in that specific situation.
Once you have your emergency plans mapped out, it’s a good idea to have a family meeting to talk through it so everyone is on the same page.
Make sure to have first aid supplies
Create a space in your home where you store all your first aid supplies. This is a good time to make sure you have items such as ice packs, antibiotics/creams, band aids, bandage wraps, thermometer, etc. Some of these items might not be used often, but they’re always good to have just in case of an accident. Other items that are also good to have on hand are extra water bottles, non-perishable foods, flashlights, batteries, and multi-purpose tools.
Ensure smoke alarms and detectors work properly
Once you get into your new home, it’s a great time to locate all smoke alarms and detectors. This will allow you to determine if you have enough of them in the house and it’s also the perfect time to test them out to make sure they work. During this time, you can take note of what type of batteries they take so you can keep backup batteries in a safe place just in case they need to be replaced sooner than expected.
Check your electrical
When you get the keys to your new home, it’s always a good idea to do a walk through and check over the home. Take the time to look over the electrical and make sure none of the cord, wires, or outlets are damaged. If you do notice anything unusual, reach out to an electrician so they can check it out for you.
Make sure to locate your water and piping system
Locate and familiarize yourself with your water and piping system so you know how to turn it off if there was a flood or a pipe were to burst. Knowing where and how to operate the system will help you in the long run if an emergency were to arise.
Look into buying a security system
Security cameras around the outside of the home have become very popular and adds an extra layer of protection. There are many different options available to consumers at different price points depending on what a homeowner is looking for. Having a security camera is a good way to monitor a home and alert you if something isn’t right.
