Moving to a new home can be exciting, but it can also bring stress to your pets. At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we understand how important it is to make this transition smooth for the entire family, including your four-legged members.
The Association of Animal Welfare Advancement notes that 7% of dogs and 8% of cats are surrendered to shelters due to housing issues during moves. We’re here to help you avoid that situation by offering tips from both our moving experts and The Humane Society of the United States. Let’s make sure your pets are safe and comfortable on moving day!
Before the move:
- Get your pets used to their crates ahead of time so they feel secure on the big day.
- Update your pets' identification tags and microchip information as soon as you know you'll be moving.
- Keep pets away from the moving crew to prevent any injuries or escape attempts.
Tips for specific pets:
-
Dogs:
- Treats can soothe anxious pups. Give your movers some treats to help your dog become familiar with them.
- Bring along their favorite blanket or toy for comfort.
- If you can’t be there to settle them into the new space, ask a family member or friend to help.
-
Cats:
- Find a quiet, designated spot for your cat during the move so they feel safe and secure.
- Keep their water bowls, toys, and blankets close by for comfort.
- Introduce them slowly to the new home, allowing them time to explore at their own pace.
-
Birds:
- Transport your birds in a well-ventilated carrier and keep them away from direct sunlight.
- Bring plenty of food and water to keep them calm throughout the day.
-
Fish:
- Place your fish in bags filled with water from their tank, and keep them in a cool, dark spot during transport.
- Set up their tank in your new home and let it run for several hours before reintroducing them.
-
Small animals:
- Be mindful of temperature fluctuations, as small animals are more sensitive to changes in heat or cold.
- Ensure they have enough food and water for the day.
Remember, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® doesn’t transport pets, so be sure to arrange your own transport for your furry and feathered friends ahead of time.
