Packing China Pieces

Packing china or glass items can be daunting, the tips below can help.

1. Use Sturdy Boxes

  • Use thick, double-walled cardboard boxes specifically made for dishes, or buy specialty dish boxes.
  • Line the bottom of the box with crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap to create cushioning.

2. Wrap Each Piece Individually

  • Use bubble wrap, foam sheets, or packing paper to wrap each piece of china individually.
  • Start with plates and lay them flat. For larger items like serving platters or bowls, add extra layers of padding.
  • Avoid using newspaper as the ink may transfer onto the china.

3. Pack Plates Vertically

  • After wrapping, stack plates vertically like records instead of laying them flat in a pile. This reduces the risk of breakage.
  • Place padding between each plate for added protection.

4. Use Dividers

  • For extra security, use cardboard dividers inside the box to separate different types of china (plates, bowls, cups) and prevent them from touching.
  • You can also use foam or fabric dividers for more delicate pieces.

5. Cushion the Space Around the China

  • Fill any gaps in the box with crumpled packing paper, foam peanuts, or bubble wrap to prevent movement during transit.
  • Ensure that each piece is tightly packed but not too crammed.

6. Pack Heavier Items First

  • Place heavier items like platters and large bowls at the bottom of the box.
  • Lighter items, such as cups or small plates, should be packed on top.

7. Label the Boxes

  • Clearly label the boxes with "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP" so movers handle them with care.
  • Consider indicating the specific contents (e.g., "Fine China – Handle with Care").

8. Use Dish Barrel Boxes

  • These are specifically designed for fragile dishware and come with reinforced walls and dividers. They're a good option if you’re packing a lot of china or want maximum protection.

9. Add an Extra Layer of Protection

  • If you’re particularly concerned, use towels, dishcloths, or soft fabrics to wrap the china or add a protective layer inside the box.
