Moving with kids? Check out these 4 helpful tips for navigating your family through a move

Moving is no simple task and can be a tough change on the family, especially kids. However, even though relocating can be difficult, there are still ways for the whole family to have a great moving experience.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Franchisee Holly Stewart’s biggest piece of advice when moving with kids is to include them in the process and to have a plan for them on the day of the move.

“A good way to include kids is by allowing them to pack some of their special belongings in a ‘move day box’ so they can easily find their favorite pajamas, lovies, blanket and toys at the new home,” Stewart said.  “I’ve seen some families do this with a suitcase – they put in their car and others have a special box that the kid has colored all over so it’s easy to spot.”

If your child is feeling stressed about the move, it can be beneficial to explain to them the items are going on the truck so the moving crew can drive them to the new home.

“If they are present during the move, our guys are always ready to give out high fives and pose for pictures with the trucks. Sometimes, seeing the items being put onto the truck helps alleviate stress, so we welcome them to check it out,” Stewart said.

Moving day comes with a lot of different emotions and can be a long day for everyone. So, if possible, it’s a good idea to find a safe, quiet place for the kiddos to stay.

“Although we do the heavy lifting, mom or dad are usually pretty busy on move day, too. So, if you can, I’d suggest arranging a babysitter or a playdate, so they don’t accidentally get in the way or hurt.  If not, keep some of their activities available and give them a designated place to play away from the commotion. “

If you have an upcoming move with kids, check out some additional tips below.

Talk about the move

Take the time to sit down with your children and explain the move. During the conversation, you can talk about what everyone is excited about and address any concerns they might have. Talking in advance also gives them time to digest information about the upcoming move and ask any questions.

Show them around the new neighborhood

Moving to a new neighborhood can be a big change, but showing your kids around the area will help them feel more comfortable and even excited for a new place to call home. Once your family is ready to take a break from unpacking, head out in the neighborhood and see what’s around. This is also a great way to meet new families and make friends.

Get them excited about their new space

Something exciting that often comes with a new home is a new room to decorate. Be sure to include your kids in the design process for their new space, whether that means letting them pick the paint color, bedding, or new decorations.

Get creative with the moving boxes

Eventually, everything is going to find a spot in the new place, and you will be left with boxes. Instead of throwing them out, repurpose them and create a fort, doll house, or puppet theatre.
