Busy moving season is upon us! Getting ready for a home move can be exciting but also stressful as you work to pack up one home and move to another.
There are plenty of questions you might have about the process of moving, and there is one question we get asked more than any other over the 40 years we’ve been doing this: How much does it cost to hire professional movers?
The answer? It depends!
There are a wide range of factors that determine the final bill of a professional moving service, including the number of movers, the time of the move, the distance of the move, and how many things are being moved. No two moves are the same, and no two moves have the same pricing.
If you’re deciding on whether you want to hire professionals or do the move yourself and you’re hung up on the pricing issue, we’ve highlighted a few areas below that will give you some insight into how the final cost might be calculated.

How much does it cost to hire a professional moving company?
The first thing that will factor in your final bill is determining the type of move you will be needing. We offer two main types of home moving options:
- Local moves: Hourly pricing
- Long-distance moves: Weight and miles pricing
Other important details include the state where the move is taking place – many states have different regulations – and the number of movers required to get the job done right. A customer service representative or a moving consultant will help you figure out all these details when you call your local franchise.
The main factors impacting a moving bill
As we’ve mentioned throughout the article, there are plenty of different factors in play here when determining what you’ll pay for hiring professional movers.
Less so with long-distance moving but more with local home moves, here are a few important things to keep in mind that all impact the cost:
- The walking distance to and from the load/unloading location
- The drive time from the load to unloading location (and from the office)
- The amount of time required to load and unload your belongings
- The number of flights of stairs involved with the move
As you read through each of these bullet points, the biggest thing you’ll notice is they’re all related to time, which is ultimately the most impactful factor in any local home move. With the bill being determined by the hour, all of the things that could add or save time will determine what you end up paying.
