Expert tips for downsizing your home after a busy summer

Downsizing with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK

The calendar has officially turned to September, a new school year has started, and that means fall is approaching quickly!

We all love the fall for the changing of the seasons, football, and Halloween, but it’s also a great time of year for those who are thinking of doing a bit of downsizing around their home. As you begin to pack away your summer gear, it’s a good time to evaluate your current living situation, take inventory on what you need and don’t need, and potentially free up a bit of space around your home before winter hits or before you take on a move.

“The more organized you are, the faster your move will go, and it will help you save money,” said Emily Sham, marketing manager for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Gulf Coast franchise. “If you have everything ready to go and labeled correctly, it will help the overall move go quicker. A key tip we give to customers includes having their boxes stacked in threes with the heaviest at the bottom. If you move all your boxes to a centralized location, that will help immensely, as will having all furniture disassembled and broken down.”

We’ve been helping our customers with downsizing for many years, and below, we put together some of our best downsizing tips to help you take on the process!

Find Out What’s Staying and What’s Going

This is probably the most important but also the most difficult step of downsizing. It can be challenging to take a look at all of your belongings and make tough choices on what needs to stay and what can get thrown away or donated, but this is a critical step in freeing up more space around your home.

A good rule of thumb is that if you don’t have any immediate need and you haven’t touched the item in a while, it can probably go!

Plan Ahead

This tip is a constant in all of our moving advice, but it’s always worth mentioning. Any type of moving, downsizing, packing, or decluttering is easier if you plan ahead and have an idea of what you want to do.

Think about where you want to downsize, what you want to accomplish, and set a date and goal for yourself to help motivate you along the way.

Consider Using Storage

Storage is a great buffer between downsizing and not having to totally purge belongings from your life. If you have the resources to do so, you can find safe, secure storage units to place your belongings for a designated amount of time.
