5 helpful tips to create a positive experience while downsizing your home

Downsizing can seem like a daunting task whether it means you’re moving to a smaller home or decluttering your current space. But there are things you can do to simplify the process, especially if you’re downsizing to a new space.

If you’re preparing to make a downsizing move, Emily Sham, the sales and marketing manager for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Gulf Coast, said the best piece of advice is to ensure you only move the items that are necessary. “For example, if you have 10 large pictures, pick your favorite two or three, to help get the load down.”

As far as the best way to prepare for a downsizing move, Sham says organization is key! “The more organized you are, the faster your move will go and save you money in the end.”

Sham adds that her best moving tip is to be prepared and organized. “If you have everything ready to go and labeled correctly, it will help the overall move go quicker and run smoother. Some key tips I give to all my customers include having boxes stacked in threes with the heaviest on the bottom. If you are able to move all your boxes in a centralized location such as a garage, that will help, as well as having anything disassembled or broken down ahead of time. All these small things will add up and take less time to move your belongings, saving you money.”

Below are additional tips for easing the stress when downsizing.

Plan ahead

Come up with a plan that includes scheduling your move, hiring movers, and the packing process. Once you know you will be moving, start researching moving companies(opens in a new window) and read through customer reviews. Other things to keep in mind when picking a moving company is to make sure the company is licensed, find out what their communication process is like, and understand how they charge. As far as packing(opens in a new window), you’re going to want to start that process early. A good tip when packing your home is to open all the doors, pack those items that are in the room along with your furniture. Once you complete an area, close the door so you know it’s complete.

Go through your items

A challenging part of downsizing is figuring out what you want to take to your new place, and what you should throw away or donate. Going through everything ahead of time will ensure you aren’t moving with anything you don’t need. When you sort through your items, create a pile for what you want to keep, donate, and throw away. If you have items you’re looking to donate, it’s a good idea to pack items that belong together in the same box and label them, then find a charity group that is looking for those items. If you’re interested in having a garage sale to get rid of items, you will want to first check and see if you need a permit- you can find this on the city or county government website. Then set a date and spread the word.

Look into storage options(opens in a new window)

If you know you will have extra items that you won’t have room for at your new home, research storage options. Also, it’s good to note that many storage facilities have set regulations and rules in addition to a general list of items that cannot be held in storage units. Some of those items that can’t be held in storage units(opens in a new window) include combustible or flammable items, medical supplies, scented candles and soap, unregistered vehicles, and perishable food items.

Become familiar with your new layout

Having a good idea of your new layout will help determine if your current furniture fits. It will also help you figure out where you want to place certain items.

Be flexible

Moving can be stressful no matter what type of move you’re making, which is why it’s important to be calm and flexible just in case everything isn’t going as planned.
