History with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®
Jon Sorber is one of the original two men along with older brother Brig Sorber. The two started the business in the early 1980s in Okemos, Michigan, to earn spending money. Using a 1966 pickup truck, the brothers placed an ad in a local shopping guide that read “Men At Work Movers … Two Men and A Truck.” The ad also included a stick figure logo designed by their mother, Mary Ellen Sheets. This logo remains the corporate symbol for what is now TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/INTERNATIONAL, Inc.
After Jon left home to attend Northern Michigan University, Sheets decided to keep the business rolling.
Upon graduation from NMU in 1988, Sorber accepted a loss prevention job with General Motors in Lansing, Michigan. A year later, he accepted a job at UPS in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he would move with his newlywed wife, Gabrielle, to start his TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchise. When he first opened his franchise, he worked at his childhood desk, behind the couch, in their one-bedroom apartment that also served as his office. At that time, Sorber was only earning about $50 a week from his franchise and continued working at UPS from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m., then focusing on his TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchise from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Sorber then did additional paperwork at night. In 1991, he quit his UPS job to focus solely on the family business. In the early ’90s, at the request of his mother, Sorber took over the original TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® moving company in Lansing, Michigan, in addition to the franchise he was building in Grand Rapids.
In 2008, Sorber sold his franchises in Grand Rapids to focus more time at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/INTERNATIONAL, Inc. and work alongside brother, Brig, sister, Melanie, and mother, Mary Ellen Sheets. At its peak, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® of Grand Rapids had 21 trucks and about 75 employees. Sorber owned and operated that franchise for 18 years. In 2007, Sorber assumed the title executive vice president of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/INTERNATIONAL, Inc.
Sorber believes his 10 years experience as a mover and driver, and 18 years experience as a successful franchisee, helps him work with Home Office staff and franchisees to help make TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® a powerhouse in the moving Industry. Sorber enjoys spending his time on the operational and strategic growth areas of the business.
