How Far in Advance Should You Schedule Moves?

I feel like this is one of the questions I hear all the time. "How far out should I schedule my move?" To be honest, I don't really think there's a perfect answer because every move is different. But if somebody asked me, I'd probably tell them the earlier you can schedule it, the better.

The reason I say that is because I've noticed waiting until the last minute usually just makes everything more stressful. If you're hiring a moving company, there's a chance they might not have the day or time you were hoping for. Which leads to you trying to work around their schedule instead of yours. I'd much rather have everything booked ahead of time and know it's taken care of. It gives you one less thing to worry about while you're trying to pack, clean, and get everything else figured out.

The Earlier You Know, The Better

One thing I would recommend is booking your movers as soon as you know you're moving. You don't have to have every single thing figured out before you schedule. It's one of those things that's nice to get crossed off your list early. That way you're not waiting until the last minute and hoping your moving company still has the date or time you wanted available.

Summer Moves Fill Up Fast

If you're moving during the summer, the thing I can't stress enough is trying to get your move scheduled as early as you can. Summer is by far the busiest time of the year for moving companies. Your kids are out of school, the weather is awesome, and for a lot of people, that's just when they decide to move. Because of that, moving companies can fill up quickly, especially on weekends or around the beginning and end of the month.

So, if you already know your move date, I don't think there's any harm in getting it on the schedule early. It gives you a much better chance of getting the day and time you actually want.

Weekends Are Popular

Most people want to move on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Sometimes life happens and you don't always have a bunch of time to plan your move. Who knows, maybe you got a new job, your lease is ending sooner than you expected, or something just came up out of nowhere. Trust me, it happens. If that's your situation, I wouldn't panic. Most moving companies are going to do everything they can to help you out.

The only thing is, when you're trying to schedule a move at the last minute, you probably won't have as many dates or times to pick from. The best advice I can give is just to try and be a little flexible. This could mean moving a day earlier or later than you planned, or maybe it means moving in the morning instead of in the afternoon. All I have to say is, the more flexible you can be with your move, the better chance you'll have of getting everything scheduled you're one of those people, I'd recommend getting your move scheduled as early as you can. Weekends work best for most people because they don't have to take off work, but that's the exact same reason they fill up so fast.

The thing is everyone has the same idea. They all want to move on the weekend too. So now that you know, I'd try to schedule your move sooner rather than later. That way, you've got a much better chance of getting the day you actually want instead of having to settle for whatever is left.

Don't Forget About Packing Time

A lot of people think once they get their movers scheduled, they're pretty much done with the hard part. But honestly, that's just one thing you get to cross off your list. You've still got to pack everything up, go through closets, clean things out, and get your house ready. That usually takes way longer than people think it's going tf you can give yourself enough time to do all of that before moving day gets here, you're going to be in a much better spot. You'll feel more prepared, you'll be less stressed, and moving day will probably go a whole lot smoother.

Consider Your Buildings Requirements

I know a lot of people don't think about this, but if you're moving into or out of an apartment, condo, or even a senior living community, there might be a few extra things you have to do before moving day. Some places want you to reserve an elevator, some require moving permits, and others only let you move during certain hours of the day.

The best thing you can do is call ahead and ask if there's anything you need to know before moving day gets here. Trust me, it's a whole lot easier to figure that stuff out ahead of time than find out the day of your move that you can't even use the elevator.

Create a Moving Timeline

One thing that can really help is making yourself some type of checklist. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. Just write down everything you know you have to get done before moving day. One thing I would recommend is making yourself a simple checklist. It doesn't have to be anything crazy either.

Just start with your moving day and work backward. Schedule your movers, start packing, update your address, transfer your utilities, and just check things off as you go. I think once you start doing that, moving doesn't seem nearly as stressful because you're only focusing on one thing at a time instead of trying to remember everything all at once.

My Final Thoughts

Planning a move can feel like a lot because it seems like there's always something else you have to do. The thing is, getting your move on the schedule early gives you a lot more flexibility and a better chance of getting the day and time you actually want. At the end of the day, moving already comes with enough things to think about. If you can get your move booked early, that's one less thing you have to worry about, and I really do think it makes the whole process a little easier on yourself.
