Packing for a move can feel overwhelming, and it's easy to assume everything in your home belongs in the moving truck. However, there are certain items that should always stay with you during your move to ensure your safety and protect your valuables.
1. Important Documents
Keep passports, birth certificates, Social Security cards, insurance paperwork, and financial records with you instead of packing them away. Having these documents easily accessible can save you time and stress after moving day.
2. Medications
Prescription medications, medical devices, and daily vitamins should travel with you. Delays can happen during a move, so it's always best to have your medications within reach.
3. Valuables
Jewelry, family heirlooms, cash, collectibles, and irreplaceable keepsakes should remain in your personal vehicle. While professional movers take great care with your belongings, these items are best transported personally.
4. Hazardous Materials
Items like gasoline, propane tanks, paint thinners, fireworks, ammunition, and other flammable or hazardous materials should never be loaded onto a moving truck. These materials can create serious safety risks during transportation.
5. Perishable Food
Fresh produce, refrigerated foods, frozen items, and open pantry goods are better consumed or donated before moving day. Long travel times can cause food to spoil and create unpleasant odors.
6. Plants
Many plants don't handle long-distance travel well due to changing temperatures and limited airflow. If possible, transport your plants in your own vehicle where you can better control the environment.
7. Pets
Your furry family members should never ride inside a moving truck. Instead, transport pets in a secure carrier with plenty of water, treats, and comfort items to help reduce stress during the move.
At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, our goal is to make your moving experience as smooth as possible. If you're unsure whether an item can be moved, our team is always happy to answer your questions before moving day so there are no surprises.
