Moving can be an exciting but stressful process, and that’s only half the battle. You still have to settle in, unpack all of your things, and get situated in the new home after your TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving team pulls away. Between getting everything put together, removing belongings from boxes, and setting up all your personal items, there is quite a bit to do!
One area that might be overlooked in all the excitement of a new home is checking for safety and ensuring your home is secure and ready to live in. On top of that, you want to develop some safety procedures for you or your family so that – in the rare case of an emergency – you know what to do and where to go.
We like to call this a “home safety checklist”, and it’s five easy things you can do in the first few days of living in your new house that can set you and your family up for long-term success and happiness.

Build an emergency plan
First things first is making an emergency plan. Nobody wants to be part of an emergency situation, but does want to be prepared if one arises.
From fires to severe weather, discuss with your family what the plan of action is so everyone knows where to go or what to do on short notice. Go over them together, figure out where to take shelter or where to exit, and make sure everyone is on the same page.
Update smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
This should be done on the very first day you move into your new home. Go around the house and check all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to see if they’re working or if they need to be replaced, and quickly replace all that are old.
Review the layout for your water and piping systems
It may fly under the radar as you’re moving into your new home, but knowing the layout for water and piping is crucial.
Review this information in the inspection notes from your home and learn what goes where and where the water shut off area is. In a situation where you need to shut it off quickly, this can be a difference in thousands of dollars of damage.
Learn your electrical setup
On move in day, go around the home and check out the electrical setup – specifically where the outlets are, your breaker box, and inspect any cords or wires. If something doesn’t look right, it’s important to get on the phone with an electrician and have them diagnose the problem as soon as possible.
Create a first aid station
Finally, it’s always a great idea to build a first aid station that is easily accessible for everyone in the home.
This should include antibiotics, band aids, thermometers, ice packs, medications, and other standard first aid items. Put these in a centralized location so everyone knows where to go in case these are needed.
