Whether you’re handing out candy, taking the kids trick or treating, or just enjoying the spooky spirit, below are a few simple things you can do to make Halloween fun and hazard-free for everyone.
1. Clear the Path
During a move, we always make sure walkways are clear to avoid trips and falls—and Halloween night is no different.
Make sure your front porch, steps, and sidewalk are free of:
- Loose cords or decorations
- Wet leaves
- Boxes or leftover move-in items (we see this a lot!)
Pro tip: Add a little lighting or glow-in-the-dark tape if needed. A well-lit path is safer and more inviting.
2. Park Smart
If you just moved in and haven’t unpacked the garage yet, you might be parking in the driveway or street. Be mindful of where your vehicle is on Halloween night. Kids in costumes don’t always look both ways (or they might not be easy to see).
Pro tip: Back into the driveway if possible. It makes it easier to leave later and keeps headlights pointed away from pedestrians.
3. Keep Pets Inside
We love our furry friends and know that you do too, but Halloween can be overwhelming for them. Doorbells, strangers, and masks can cause anxiety or even aggression. Keep pets safely inside or in a quiet room, especially if you're expecting a lot of visitors.
4. Decorate Safely
Inflatables, extension cords, hanging decorations, it all adds to the fun; but be sure to make sure nothing becomes a hazard. Avoid placing electrical cords across walkways, and secure anything that could blow over in the wind. If you're using candles (real or battery-operated), keep them out of reach of kids and pets.
5. Be the Friendly House
Just moved in? Halloween is a great time to meet the neighbors. A friendly “Happy Halloween!” and a bowl of candy on the porch can go a long way in making new connections—especially with little ones (and their parents).
6. Dress Warm
New to Northern Michigan? You will see that Halloween typically starts the snowfall in Northern Michigan. Whether rain or snow, dress warm! It is easier to take off layers than it is to add them while walking house to house!
