As summer winds down and backpacks start replacing beach bags, many families across Northern Michigan are gearing up for a big transition—not just back to school, but into a new home! Whether you're moving across Traverse City, Petoskey, Manistee, Alpena, or across the state, a late summer move comes with its own set of challenges. We know because we’ve helped hundreds of Northern Michigan families settle in just in time for the school bell.
Here are a few practical tips from the crew at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Northern Michigan to make your back-to-school move as smooth as possible:
Make sure you are calling a moving company ahead!
The fall is crunch time in Northern Michigan for moving, trying to get settled in before the snow starts to fall. If you have not already scheduled your move, we recommend scheduling ASAP. Try to schedule early in the week or mid-month when there’s a bit more flexibility. The more flexible you are with your moving date, the better chances there will be to reserve your move on our busiest weeks!
Get your school stuff sorted out first
It is best to double-check your new school's enrollment requirements before moving, especially when it comes to what is needed for proof of residency. Keep documents like utility bills, lease agreements, or closing papers separate from your taped up moving boxes to ensure that you are prepared for enrollment! We also recommend keeping all school and sports supplies packed together so they are ready to go on the first day!
Create a "First week" essentials kit
Starting in a new home and potentially a new school on the first day is stressful enough. You may still be unpacking, you want to make sure that everything you need for the first few days are together to help the first week of school run smoothly! Things like school supplies, clothing, chargers, toiletries, and water bottles packed together will ensure that there is no last minute worry.
Research for local support.
Northern Michigan takes pride in a strong sense of community. Reach out to your new schools PTO, Facebook groups, or even your new neighbors for information on your new area. What may be needed for your new school, community events, parks, beaches, etc.
Let the kids help!
Studies have shown that moving is one of the top 10 most stressful times in someone's life. Letting the kids help will help relive your children's stress in this time. Let them pack some of their own boxes or picking out decorations for their new room will help give them something to look forward to.
Plan for downtime
Whether in a town or just in a new home, moving is exhausting! Planning for downtime will help your family reset and recharge. Spend a day at the beach on Torch Lake, walk the trails at the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, Golf at Bay Harbor Golf Club, walk through Mackinaw City, or schedule a tour to see shipwrecks in Alpena.
At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Northern Michigan, we know a thing or two about Northern Michigan moves. Whether you're heading into a new district, downsizing after the kids leave the nest, or just looking for a fresh start before the snow flies, our local team is here to help!
