How to Move a Stove

As the Movers Who Care®, we help you move your things and teach you how to move yourself.

While we still recommend reaching out to your local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchise, we understand you may love rolling up your sleeves and doing the hard work yourself to offset costs by doing some of the work on your own. Whatever your reason is, we are here to help!

Moving certain home appliances requires extensive planning and preparation. Your kitchen stove is one of those appliances. Whether you are moving or just revamping your kitchen, our teams at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK are your go-to source for expert advice on safely moving your kitchen stove.

Necessary equipment

Kitchen stoves are often hefty and delicate appliances. As a result, the right moving equipment must be used to guarantee a safe and damage-free move. To safely move your kitchen stove, we recommend that you have the following equipment:

  • Protective gloves - You need to wear protective gloves during the move to grip the stove better and protect your hands from cuts or blisters.
  • Wrench - For gas stoves, you need to disconnect the gas line before moving. To do this, you will need a wrench.
  • Dolly or hand truck - We recommend using a dolly or a hand truck to move the stove. This helps you avoid the strain and stress of having to do the heavy lifting.
  • Furniture slider - A furniture slider will protect your floor from scratches while you move the stove.
  • Protective padding - You’ll need to wrap the stove with a protective padding layer to protect it during the move. The padding ensures the stove does not scratch or get damaged during the move. You can also use moving blankets as the padding.

Steps to moving a stove

1. Prep the stove

First, you must make sure that the grates and other loose parts are removed from the stove so nothing shakes around or falls off during the move. We also recommend cleaning the oven to prevent leaks on your floor.

2. Disconnect the electric and gas

You’ll need to turn off the breaker to the stove and unplug the cord from the outlet. Shut off the gas valve and disconnect the gas line for gas stoves.

3. Measure doorways and hallways

Before you start moving, you need to measure all doorways, hallways, and stairways that the stove will need to pass through. This is important to confirm that the stove can fit through these openings. This will help ensure a smooth move and prevent damage to your home or the stove.

4. Move the Stove sideways through doorways

When dollying or carrying the stove through doorways, we recommend you turn the stove so that the wider end does not go through the doorway first. This typically means turning the stove so one of the sides goes out first.

5. Get help

Moving a stove is a challenging task and should be done with others. Consider hiring professional movers like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK to ensure the job is done safely. If you can’t, you should do the next best thing: enlist the help of your friends or neighbors.

6. Use professional moving equipment

It’s essential to use professional moving equipment when moving a stove. Use a dolly to help you move the stove safely and efficiently, and use moving straps to secure the stove to the dolly.
